NVW2022: David Hansford

As part of the 2022 National Volunteer Week (NVW), celebrated from May 16 – 22, we are shining a light on just some of the wonderful volunteers that help run athletics in Victoria. Today, meet David Hansford.

When and where did you first get involved with Athletics?

I first became involved just over ten years ago, in 2011.

What do you like the most about Officiating?

The interaction with the athletes and other officials.

Who has been the best athlete you’ve ever witnessed when officiating?

I had the privilege of watching Linden Hall become the first Australian woman to break the 4-minute barrier for the 1500m.

What are the 3 key things you bring to every meet?

A smile, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn new things.

What is one book every person should read in their lifetime?

Anything by Sir Terry Prattchet.

What is your favourite event to officiate?

Definitely track. Whether officiating at the starting line, the finish line or working in the photo finish.

If you had to explain the positives of officiating to someone, what are the top 3?

    1) The social interactions,

    2) Being involved in athletics, 

    3) Learning new skills and applying them
