The wait is finally over for Geelong region athletes, with the newly upgraded track at Landy Field open to the public.
The $1.5 million upgrade includes a completely refurbished (blue!) athletics track, which used over 50 tonnes of recycled crumbed rubber – the equivalent of 9,405 car tyres. The upgrade allows Landy Field to retain its World Athletics Class 2 accreditation, and also promotes environmental sustainability in its use of recycled materials.
In addition to a sparkling new track, the hammer throw and discus cages have been given significant upgrades.
While Landy Field is ready to receive athletes for competition, there is more work to be completed. There is to be a new $10 million pavilion, co-funded by the Victorian Government and the City of Geelong. The 2 storey pavilion will include a competition office, public toilets, change rooms, kiosk, social/community spaces, a meeting room and uniform store, establishing Landy Field as the Geelong’s premier regional athletics facility and will both promote the growth of athletics in the area while attracting premier events.
First to test out the new athletics facilities will be those entered for the Surf Coast Classic on Saturday January 4. On offer will be 5 races across 5,000m and 10,000m. Added to this event will be three field events – shot put, pole vault and long jump.
Athletes in the track events must supply a lap scorer; failure to do so may result in disqualification.
The minimum age for all events is 14 years of age as of 31st of December 2024.
Athletes wanting to run in the 10,000m event must be 16 years of age as of 31st of December 2024.
All are welcome to join the post Christmas festivities and celebrate the new Landy Field track – entries close midday on January 2. Head here for all of your event information.
