The Victorian Athletics Mourns the Passing of Stanley (Stan) Guilfoyle AM.

The Athletics Victoria community is saddened to learn of the passing of past President Stanley (Stan) Guilfoyle AM.

Guilfoyle, 99, passed away on July 2. An Athletics Victoria Life Member, Guilfoyle was president of the Victorian Athletic Association Inc. (now Athletics Victoria) from 1984-1989 and served on various councils, including the Melbourne Marathon Incorporated committee.

Guilfoyle supported his wife, Dame Margaret Guilfoyle (dec.), throughout her distinguished career in politics and was a director of commercial radio station 3XY and a founding director of the Cormack Foundation.

Guilfoyle’s tenure as Victorian Athletic Association President was a resounding success. A member of Athletics Essendon and an accountant by trade, Stan’s keen financial eye centred the sport in Victoria, allowing for significant growth during the 1980s. Guilfoyle then took on the role of Treasurer for five years following his Presidency given his strong interest in ensuring the financial stability of the sport. Stanley went on to initiate the creation of the Athletics Victoria Trust, still in operation today, to oversee the success and growth of athletics in the state.

Stan Guilfoyle will be sorely missed.
