NVW2022: Doreen Giannini

As part of the 2022 National Volunteer Week (NVW), celebrated from May 16 – 22, we are shining a light on just some of the wonderful volunteers that help run athletics in Victoria. Today we’re proud to introduce Doreen Giannini.

When and where did you first get involved with Athletics?

1975 at Aberfeldie Park Little A’s.

What do you like the most about Officiating?

Watching the athletes grow and mature. Plus, the great friendships formed.

Who has been the best athlete you’ve ever witnessed when officiating?

Usain Bolt and the outstanding Australian, Cathy Freeman.

What are the 3 key things you bring to every meet?

Folder, pen and water bottle.

What is one book every person should read in their lifetime?

Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela.

Favourite event to officiate?

I can’t choose!

If you had to explain the positives of officiating to someone, what are the top 3?

Can I have four?!

  1. To watch athletes grow, not necessarily as athletes but as people.
  2. Watching athletes start as children and continue on and compete with their children.
  3. Just being part of the whole thing is very satisfying. Meeting people from around the country, and the world.
  4. Oh! And add the chance to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, or occasionally fresh air and rain and we have it all!
