Athletics Victoria is proud to extend its partnership with VicHealth, continuing its commitment to protecting young people from the harms of vaping through new initiatives delivered via UNCLOUD.
UNCLOUD is VicHealth’s anti-vaping and nicotine campaign designed with and for young people aged 12 – 25 by sharing real stories and cutting through misinformation. The initiative brings together universities and sporting bodies to deliver localised vaping and other nicotine-related prevention activities that connects young people to see vaping for what it really is.
Working with their communities, partners will create vaping and other nicotine-related prevention solutions that address their young people’s influences and needs.
Athletics Victoria CEO Matthew Duck said Athletics Victoria was proud to build on its work in this important area.
“Athletics Victoria has partnered with VicHealth’s UNCLOUD campaign for the past two years, and we’re proud to extend that partnership through to at least May 2027.”
“With vaping rates still high among young people, the UNCLOUD campaign plays a critical role in shining a light on the very real impacts of vaping.”
VicHealth’s Commercial and Economic Systems Manager, Bonnie Matheson, welcomed the partnership with Athletics Victoria, highlighting the important role community sport plays in supporting the health and wellbeing of young Victorians.
“So many young Victorians get involved in athletics to build their confidence, stay active and support their mental wellbeing. That’s what makes it such a powerful setting to have honest conversations about vaping and nicotine and to cut through the misinformation they’re exposed to every day.”
“By working alongside Athletics Victoria, we can reach young people where they already feel supported. UNCLOUD is about protecting young people and giving them the facts about the harms of vaping as well as the confidence to resist the marketing tactics of the tobacco and vaping industries.”
Research shows that vapes are commonly marketed to young people, most contain nicotine, and can act as a gateway to smoking, which is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Victoria. Frequent vaping is also linked to increased anxiety and depression symptoms among young users.
This initiative is funded by VicHealth and provides an evidence-based approach to tackle youth vaping.
