XCR’17 – Round 2 – Wandin Park – Preview

This Saturday we’re back at Wandin Park for what is sure to be a cracking day of competition. The weather is looking stunning which will no doubt play into some exceptional performances and fast times. Again we have an increase of competitors from last year which shows the strength of the XCR competition and the enthusiasm each athlete has for the sport of cross-country. For those who are competing for the first time, Wandin Park is situated an hour east of the Melbourne’s CBD. The course offers undulating hills and a breathtaking backdrop of the Victorian countryside which will offer value to both participant and spectator.

With a stacked field entered, it’s could be anyone’s race. However, there are a few familiar faces entered, who have had exceptional XCR careers and continue to dominate nationally and internationally.

In the Men’s Open Division, Rio Olympian Liam Adams (Essendon) will be lining up for the second time after finishing with his team in sixth position at Jells Park. Liam will be a serious contender to take out the top individual prize. Veteran Nick Earl (MUAC) has had a great start to the season, finishing with his teammates in third place at Jells Park before going on to win Puffing Billy’s Great Train Race. Will Potter (Box Hill) was involved with the winning Men’s Division 1 team at Jells Park and will no doubt be looking to add an individual title to his name at Wandin tomorrow.

In the Women’s Open Division the usual suspects in Gemma Maini (Frankston), Anna Kelly (South Melbourne) and Virginia Moloney (Collingwood) will be jostling it out for bragging rights of the first individual event of the year. Gemma has started the year off exceptionally well, taking out Puffing Billy’s Great Train Race, and finishing third (whilst being the quickest in her team) at the Jells Park relays. Anna seems to be in great form after her team finished in fifth position at Jells Park, and also submitting the second fastest time of the day in 20.51. Virginia has been at the top of the game for a while, and it was no exception out at Jells Park as she found herself passing over the baton in the fastest time for the day (20.32), which went a long way in securing her team’s second place finish. It’s fair to say that Wandin Park will go down to the wire…

Forecast:

Early morning fog, becoming sunny with a top temperature of 17 degrees. There is 10% chance of rain (no way it’s going to happen) and the UV index is set to low (so no need to slip, slop, slap). For those who are considering whether to rug up, there is a slight chance of a frost risk, however we advise that you have all the appropriate clothing on standby just in case. It is Melbourne after all!  The wind is clocking in at a maximum of 8 km/h in a SSW direction – so for those of you living down the coast, that means it’s slightly onshore.  However there are some nice protected areas to get a fun surf in such as Spouts Creek.

If you missed out on entering Wandin Park Cross Country, you still have plenty of time to get entered into Cruden Farm. Make sure you head to the Athletics Victoria Members Portal to ensure you don’t miss out again! Closing date for Cruden is Wednesday 24th May – 12pm (midday).
