XCR’16 Round 3 – Cruden Farm Wrap

For the first time Athletics Victoria hosted a round of XCR at the renowned Cruden Farm, the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch’s famed home and gardens in Langwarrin.

With great support from Frankston Athletics Club the day was great success and the feedback suggested this could become a feature on the XCR calendar for years to come.

Once again Western Athletics had a strong showing at XCR’16 Round 3, with Mia White (Girls – U14), Liam Cashin (Boys – U20) and Jack Rayner (Men – Open) all claiming line honours.

Glenhuntly runner Tarli Bird made it back-to-back XCR wins in the women’s open division, on the two courses included in 2016.

It was also great to see Australian Triathlon representative Annabel Luxford competing for Yarra Ranges after morning training session that included 100km bunch ride.

XCR’16 Round 2 – Wandin Park Wrap

On a day that could have been confused for mid-summer, 832 runners participated in XCR’16 Round 2 at Wandin Park on Saturday 7 May.

Located 45 kilometres east of Melbourne, athletes contended with a tough, but, enjoyable course, better known for its international horse riding events.

With the heat playing its part for the longer distance events, Athletics Essendon athlete Mitchel Brown claimed line honours in the first individual race of the season, winning the open men’s division in a time of 26 minutes 41 seconds.

In the women’s open race Glenhuntly’s Tarli Bird enjoyed the longer distance, coming home strong to win in 21 minutes 56 seconds.

The under 14 boys and girls kicked of the racing at Wandin Park and it was local Samuel Norton of Yarra Ranges who claimed the boys event with a time of 6 minutes 56 seconds.

In the girl’s section Western Athletics runner Mia White produced a convincing win in a time of 7 minutes 23 seconds.

Western Athletics added their second win of the day when Liam Cashin stormed home to win the men’s under 20 race in a time of 13 minutes 28 seconds.

Finishing behind Cashin, Rio Paralympic hopeful Jaryd Clifford crossed the line in 13 minutes 35 seconds to win the boys under 18 division.

Doncaster Athletics Charlotte Bassett dominated the women’s under 20 race, finishing in a time of 15 minutes 36 seconds.

Ballarat Region runner Nicholas Fidler adapted to the conditions at Wand Park the best in the boys under 16 division, claiming line honours in 10 minutes 43 seconds.

World under 20 championships bound runner Amelia Mazza-Downie was too strong in the under 18 girls event, winning in a time of 12 minutes.

In the under 16 girl’s race Abbey Caldwell made it a second victory for Doncaster, with a finishing time of 12 minutes 47 seconds.

The next round of XCR’16 heads to Cruden Farm on Saturday 21 May for the heritage weekend. Event entries close 12pm midday on Wednesday 18 May.
