We are absolutely delighted with today’s announcement from Athletics Australia and the Victorian State Government that one of Australia’s greatest sporting heroes, Peter Norman, will be immortalised with the striking of a bronze statue at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne.
In addition to the statue, Athletics Australia has adopted October 9th as Peter Norman Day and have inaugurated a Peter Norman Humanitarian Award, awarded to a member of the Australian athletics community who exemplifies the spirit of Peter Norman through their work for human rights, equality and humanitarian causes.
This year’s recipient, two-time Olympian Eloise Wellings, was chosen due to her inspiring work as founding Director of the Love Mercy Foundation. A very worthy recipient – congratulations Eloise!
This Saturday’s 200m for both men and women at Doncaster (AV Shield Round 2) will be in Peter Norman’s honour to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.
