Big V stars shine at Vic Country Championships

Over 700 athletes joined a mix of Commonwealth Games stars including Eleanor Patterson at the Victorian Country Championships over this Australia Day weekend in Bendigo.

The country championships took place in Bendigo for the fifth time since 2000 and didn’t disappoint with Patterson starting her 2015 season in winning style on Saturday with a jump of 1.91m.

Chilwell rising thrower Ned Weatherly was dominate in the men under 18 hammer throw with a distance of 70.89m, well clear of local Christopher Browne from Bendigo Harriers who threw 55.01m.

Weatherly also took gold ahead of Browne in the under 18 shot put with a throw of 17.30m.

Williamstown athlete Celeste Mucci continues to push her credentials as a multi event athlete after winning the under 18 high jump with a height of 1.72m. Chilwell jumper Ruby Cordner was the best of the country jumpers with height of 1.60m.

On the final day of competition Mucci also claimed honours in the women’s under 18 100m hurdles event with a time of 14.63.

2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games 4x100m relay and 200m representative Ashleigh Whittaker hit the track for the first time this season with an impressive first up 11.68 in to win the 100m dash.

Australian 400m reigning champion Morgan Mitchell made the trip to Bendigo to get the 2015 season underway and took out both the 400m in 54.24 and the 200m in 25.07 in the build up to the Hunter Track Classic next weekend.
