Athletics Victoria is saddened to pass on the news that Box Hill stalwart, Joan Hines, has passed away aged 90.
Joan played a key role in the women’s athletics movement in Victoria and held the role of ‘Chair of the Victorian Women’s Amateur Association’, along with being a founding member of ‘Box Hill Women’s Athletic Club’ in 1953.
Contributing across all areas of athletics, Joan’s dedication to the sport she loved was evident in her roles as ‘Chairperson of the Officials Committee’ and a member of the ‘Kitty McEwen Victorian Sportswomen Committee’ for many years.
Along with her efforts in encouraging women to participate in athletics, Joan lead the way in helping the transition to join with the men’s athletics association.
Joan’s devotion to athletics was recognised by both her club, Box Hill (Life Member – 1979) and Athletics Victoria (Life Member – 1993).
Athletics Victoria sends its thoughts to the Hines family, friends and Box Hill Athletics Club.
The funeral will be held at St. Bedes Catholic Church, Servern Street, North Balwyn, on Wednesday 21 May at 11.00am
